A Family Affair: Monica & Motherhood

Lil Rocko & Romelo

Lil' Rocko & Romelo

Yesterday, I was invited to attend a birthday party for Rodney (Lil Rocko) & Romelo, the two sons of singer and fellow Sunkissed Mommy Monica. While I waited for the guests of honor to arrive, I was priviliged enough to get sometime to chat with her mother, Marilyn. I always appreciate when I can get an older Sunkiseed Mommy’s perspective on things since they have so much experience with raising children and life in general. She gushed about how proud she was of her daughter and what a wonderful mother Monica is. In talking with her it is clear to see where Monica gets her poise.

I have read a lot of reviews about Monica’s new reality show and for the most part, the comments are positive yet some people are wondering when the drama will start. Her mom told me that “even as a child Monica was very respectful and in those times when she did act up, she did it in a respectful manner.” It is very hard for me to enivision that her show will consist of any “showing-out” because it does not appear to be in her character.

Ms. Marilyn and I also talked about how natural it is to be there for her grandchildren.  I looked around and family was the major theme of the evening. When I watched the first episode of Still Standing, I said to myself: her mom is just like my mom, in that, my mom is always there when I need her to be. No matter what it is, if I call her and say, I need your help, she is there, putting whatever she has to do aside. If it weren’t for her support, I couldn’t do half the things I wanted to do. It is evident that Monica has a strong support system from her family and her mother reassured me that when it is time for me to be a grandmother I would do the same. She said “it’s second nature, it’s what we do.”

When Monica and the boys arrived, everyone was abuzz because they were filming for future episodes of Still Standing. Lil’ Rocko (4 years old) walked right over to the camera and got his lil’ celebrity on posing for the press. By the way, I have always been a huge fan of orange and I thought he looked incredibly sharp.

Romelo (1 year old) was taking everything in and seemed to be amazed at all the lights and the people. He got so excited when his brother, Ramone came over it was priceless! He did what any one year old would do at their birthday party, enjoy cake and look for mommy.

As a mother of boys myself, I wanted to know from Monica what she thinks are some of the challenges that lie ahead for her and her sons. She said “I want to teach my boys to treat people as they would treat themselves; I give them those values and morals so that they create their own path so they don’t have to follow in mine or anybody else’s.”  In this day and age it is extremely important that we instill in our children how to be leaders. I appreciated our small chat and it was wonderful to see her interacting with her children and enjoying her family. Monica has a warming presence about her and even in her role as a celebrity she is extremely down to earth. Stay tuned for more exclusives from one of my favorite Sunkissed Mommies, Monica. Much success and happiness to her! Enjoy the pics! Check out Talking With Tami for her perspective and more pics as well!

Be sure to tune in and watch Still Standing on BET, Tuesday nights at 10PM. Join SKM on Twitter as we discuss the episode using hashtag #stillstanding. Ciao!
